The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and Department of Justice have reported that "12-15 year olds are victimized at a rate of 84 percent higher than the general population," (U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics-1994).

1 out of 4 kids have been solicited online by an adult.
1 out of 33 kids have been aggressively pursued online by an adult.

3. Teach Your Children About Online Safety

a. CyberSense
i. Don’t Talk To Strangers
1. It’s hard to spot a stranger online
2. You can be who you want to be online
3. A ’12 year old girl from Little Rock’ could really be a 50 year male from Batesville.
ii. Come Straight Home After School
1. Don’t wonder around on the Internet.
2. Know where you are going, get there and stay there
3. If they are just randomly surfing, set a time limit.
iii. Don’t Pick Fights
1. CyberBullying
2. If you get into a conversation that makes you feel uncomfortable, leave the chat room, block the email, whatever it takes
iv. Don’t Take Candy From a Stranger
1. Don’t open emails from people you don’t know
2. Don’t open an attachment if you don’t already know what it is
3. They may contain virus, worms, spyware
v. Don’t tell people personal things about yourself
1. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve ‘known them’ online.

c. phone number
d. social security numbers

f. names of family members

1. Talk to your children about where they go and who they talk to.

a. Put your computer in a public area where others can see, NOT in a bedroom
b. Know what sites your child frequents and check those sites out.
c. Get their passwords to all accounts (email, instant messenger, etc.)
d. If they are on a ‘Community Site’ (MySpace, Xanga, FaceBook), get full access to their page.
e. If they have a blog, check it several times a week.
